Here it is!

This challenge was all about designing a dress for a “Save the Animals” cocktail party! I chose to make a dress that was inspired by the endangered freshwater pearl mussel.

I decided to use the freshwater pearl mussel as my inspiration for several reasons. First of all, not many people know about the fact that the pearl mussel is in fact one of our most endangered animals. When it comes to thinking of endangered species everyone says tigers, pandas, rainforest animals, etc. People have obviously been killing these poor little critters for their pearls, and this is being overlooked. How my dress reflects and supports the pearl mussel: Instead of killing mussels and using pearls I used PLASTIC PEARLS! Yey! They can look just as nice, and even come in a variety of colors! The purse that goes with my outfit is shaped like a pear mussel, but of course would not be made of one. The grey of the dress is the color of the pearl mussel. The blue of the dress is for water that they are found in. The bottom portion of the dress, which is made of green tool, represents the alga that often grows of these muscles.

The main blue portion of the dress is made of silk chiffon. Under the chiffon is a voile, and on the bust protion there is a built in strapless bra. The silver fabric under the bust would be made of satin. The green coming out of the bottom of the dress would be made of tool. The white pearl shaped beads would be made of plastic, and they would be on small very thin silver chains (like necklace chains). The purse would be made of a dark grey satin that faded from dark to light. The shoes have ribbons that climb up the calf that would be made of grey satin, the same color as the portion under the bust. There would also be plastic fake pearls on the shoes.

In her hair there is a net that resembles an actual fishing net. There are also fake pearls in her hair.

Even though this outfit was based on the endangerment of freshwater pearls, it also represents all of the other endangered animals of the sea that are often overlooked.
